Depression can show up in minor or chronic ways, though it is typically characterized by persistently depressed mood or loss of interest in activities, fatigue, causing significant impairment in daily life. When individuals struggle with depression they may also have thoughts such as “I don’t want to be here anymore”. Depression can be caused by a multitude of things, such as unsealed trauma, stress, loss, change, or unhealthy life habits. If you are struggling with depression, you are not alone. David was troubled and battled deep despair (Psalm 42:11), describing it as his soul feeling “downcast”. Elijah was discouraged, weary, and afraid, and even struggled with thoughts of death (1 Kings 19:4). God did not shame them, in fact He told them to sit in the struggle with Him, provided comfort and grace, then supported them as He encouraged them to stand up and work again. “The Lord hears His people when they call to Him for help. He rescues them from all their troubles” (Psalm 34:17-18).

Anxiety can also show up in different ways, either as heathy and normal human anxiety or chronic anxiety that is characterized by excessive, intense, and persistent worry and fear about every day situations. Individuals struggling with anxiety may also experience somatic symptoms such as fast heart rate, rapid breathing, agitation, or feeling tired. Anxiety also has many causes such as stress, unhealthy internal dialogue, loss, change, and more. Moses struggled with feeling worn out and wary, and when he cried out in hopelessness and despair, God came to his aid (Exodus 2:23-25), and He tells us to move forward. We can find perfect peace if our minds are fixed on Him (Isaiah 26:3) for “God did not give me a spirit of fear or timidity, but of power, love, and sound mind” (2 Timothy 1:7).

Individuals struggling with depression or anxiety can sometimes turn to maladaptive sources of coping such as alcohol, drugs, self-harm, or isolation, because it provides temporary relief to a deeper problem, therefore causing more distress in the long term. o develop even more distress. Diagnosing depression involves a psychiatric evaluation to determine whether a person’s symptoms are actually being caused by a different disorder. A person must have been experiencing symptoms for at least two weeks to be diagnosed with depression. Every case is unique and requires individual attention, but there are a number of effective complementary ways of treating depression, including:

  • Talk therapy
  • Medication
  • Adopting a healthier lifestyle

“Peace I leave with you, my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid” John 14:27
